Jack Daniel's, an icon of Tennessee whiskey with roots stretching back to 1866, is globally recognized for its distinctive square bottle and smooth, charcoal-mellowed character. A brand steeped in heritage and craftsmanship, it boasts a fiercely loyal customer base and a distinct brand identity. We partnered with Jack Daniel's to elevate jackdaniels.com, delivering a modern customer experience with global scalability. For a brand of their stature, the challenge was clear: balance time-honored tradition with cutting-edge digital innovation.


The Challenge
Jack Daniel's needed a digital transformation to connect with a new generation of audience, empower its global teams, and bring its rich heritage to life online.


The Vision
Jack Daniel's envisioned a globally scalable digital platform that would empower their international teams to easily manage content while maintaining brand consistency. They wanted a system where individual markets could use a library of custom-designed templates within a simplified CMS, giving them the freedom to create complex, visually stunning pages without the need to build each one from the ground up. The aim: to streamline content management and elevate their digital storytelling. Ultimately, they wanted the website to become a central hub for the Jack Daniel's brand, a place where consumers could immerse themselves in the history, craftsmanship, and culture surrounding their favorite whiskey.


The Process
To deliver on this vision, our team quickly settled into a Jack Daniel's frame of mind, gaining a deep understanding of the brand and business needs. We didn't just want to build a website; we wanted to create a digital experience that felt as authentic as a visit to Lynchburg. We then proceeded with the following approach:
Discovery & Strategy: We kicked things off with deep dives into Jack Daniel's brand, audience, and digital footprint. This included a comprehensive site audit, stakeholder interviews, and extensive research, which ultimately informed the new information architecture and site flow. We defined the strategic direction and pinpointed key opportunities for digital enhancement. This phase was about listening, learning, and truly understanding what makes Jack Daniel's tick.
User Experience (UX) & Design: We immersed ourselves in the Jack Daniel's brand aesthetic, exploring its visual language, core values, and the nuances of the existing customer experience. Our team then crafted intuitive interfaces that embody the spirit of Jack Daniel's and prioritized user engagement, brand storytelling, and a seamless experience across all devices. This involved extensive user research and testing, iterative prototyping, and close collaboration with Jack Daniel's, ensuring that the final design truly captured the spirit of the brand. We focused on creating a design that was both modern and timeless, reflecting the brand's heritage while appealing to new audiences.
Development & Implementation: We built robust, scalable digital solutions, including a redesigned, responsive website. A key part of this was developing a flexible collection of custom CMS “blocks” that could be leveraged within a user-friendly CMS (Drupal) and that gave Jack Daniel's the control they needed to manage their content effectively across 22 international markets. We also used React for dynamic front-end components and Tailwind CSS for a streamlined and modern design system. We made sure the platform was rock-solid, secure, and ready to handle whatever Jack Daniel's threw its way.
Analytics & Optimization: We implemented analytics tools to track user behavior and measure solution effectiveness, setting the stage for continuous improvement driven by data. We're all about data-driven decisions, so we ensured the new site was able to track how users were interacting, allowing Jack Daniel’s to continually refine and improve the experience.


The Solution
Detroit Labs delivered a comprehensive digital solution that transformed Jack Daniel's online presence. Key elements included:
A redesigned, responsive website: A seamless, engaging brand experience featuring a searchable database of cocktail tutorials, deep archive of Jack Daniel’s products throughout history, interactive content, virtual distillery tours, and complex international e-commerce components that allow customers to find and purchase online in markets around the world.
A global Content Management System (CMS): To empower international teams to efficiently manage content with brand consistency and regional flexibility, we delivered a system that streamlined content creation for bespoke pages (using 28 flexible components), templated pages (11 pre-designed types), and custom pages; provided Drupal-powered localization for 22 international markets; and included reusable content libraries and automated content scheduling. We built a CMS that gave Jack Daniel's the ability to create and scale content efficiently while maintaining the consistency and character of its iconic brand across the world.
The partnership between Jack Daniel’s and Detroit Labs elevated an already iconic brand, expanding its web presence to better connect with new whiskey lovers around the world.
